The Emoti0nal Toll On Women

Research on Hair Loss in Women

“First published in 2009, I was interviewed for this article, which explores the profound emotional toll that hair loss can have on women. Drawing from my experience as a trichologist, it sheds light on how hair loss impacts self-esteem, mental health, and personal relationships—issues that many women face in silence. Though written 16 years ago, its insights remain as relevant today as ever, as more women seek solutions and support for this silent struggle.”

The Effects of Female Hair Loss on Women’s Psychological Wellbeing – Women Suffering in Silence

Research based on an independent survey of 3,016 women revealed:

84% of women suffer from low self-esteem.

Over 34% feel depressed due to their hair thinning.

While society fully accepts male hair loss, 97% of respondents said women feel embarrassed to admit it. Hair loss is viewed as socially unacceptable for women, which increases their distress.

Over Half of Women Are Suffering

Female hair loss is a common problem:

65% of respondents said they know women who suffer from hair loss.

More than 1 in 3 women (37%) experience it themselves.

Registered Trichologist Sara G Allison commented:
“These statistics are compatible with what I see in my practice. Nearly three-quarters of my clients are women, with an average age of 35–45 years. Hair loss is much more devastating for women than it is for men. When female clients initially see me, they are often so distressed they break down in tears.”

She added:
“The most common causes are hormonal, stress-related, and nutritional deficiencies. Unfortunately, stress and poor nutrition are becoming increasingly prevalent, reflected in the higher incidence of female hair loss.”

Hair Loss Impacts on Women’s Sex Lives and Personal Lives

Over half of women with hair loss (52%) avoid intimacy because they feel unattractive.

86% say hair loss lowers their confidence in relationships.

28% say their personal lives have suffered as a result of their hair loss.

Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, a psychologist, commented:
“In Western culture, hair is bound up in notions of femininity, youth, and sexual attractiveness. It’s understandable that over half of women avoid intimacy due to feeling less attractive.”

Difficulty to Find a Soul Mate

Hair loss affects women’s confidence in all areas of life:

39% believe their partner suffers vicariously because of their hair loss.

96% think hair loss may hinder their chances of meeting a new partner.

Dr. Papadopoulos explained:
“Because hair plays such a visible role in value judgments about health and attractiveness, thinning hair provokes anxiety and lowers self-esteem. Women also face stigma, which further adds to their stress.”

Hair Loss and Depression

Hair loss significantly impacts mental health:

34% of women feel depressed or low.

18% avoid social situations because they feel self-conscious.

12% report feeling isolated because no one can explain why it’s happening.

Dr. Papadopoulos remarked:
“Our appearance greatly influences self-esteem. Losing control over something as visible as hair can understandably impact mood and confidence.”

What Are the Reasons for Female Hair Loss

Survey participants identified the following as the top causes of hair loss:

  1. Stress (36%)
  2. Medication (11%)
  3. Poor diet (10%)
  4. Pregnancy or post-pregnancy (10%)

Registered Trichologist Sara G Allison commented:
“While these reasons reflect women’s beliefs, I’d rank poor diet much higher as a cause. Hair is the least essential tissue in the body, so it only receives nutrients if there are any left after the vital organs are nourished. Without optimum health, hair suffers.”

Female Hair Loss Has Not Been Accepted by Society

90% of women believe society views male hair loss as more acceptable.

96% feel men cope better with hair loss because they can still feel attractive.

Sara added:
“Many of my clients feel judged or socially unacceptable because of their hair loss. This leads to low confidence, impacting their work, relationships, and social lives.”

Where to Turn When Suffering from Hair Loss

When women try to improve their hair, they often:

  1. Consult a specialist (41%).
  2. Take a supplement for hair loss (19%).
  3. Change their diet (9%).

Sara explained:
“Modern diets make it difficult to get enough nutrients due to how food is produced. Supplements like Hair Today More Tomorrow, M&O’s provide targeted support to maintain healthy hair growth.”
